Hipline
Roof framing marks for every rafter, in the order you lay out the board.
What it does
Hipline solves the geometry of regular roofs: gable commons, and hips and valleys where both roof planes share one pitch, with their jacks. For each member it draws a mark sheet — numbered marks in layout order from the ridge end, on the measuring line — and every number opens Show the math.
The cut list groups jacks by identical length with their counts and cheek handedness, and can be shared as an image. Roofs are saved on your phone so you can reopen yesterday’s job.
What it does not claim
- Shed roofs, unequal-pitch hips and valleys, gambrels, mansards, dormers and trusses are not solved; the app says so instead of showing a number. Valley cripple jacks (valley down to a plate) are not listed.
- Hipline is geometry only. It says nothing about spans, member sizes, loads, snow, wind or building codes, and makes no judgement about whether a seat, heel or height above plate is adequate.
- Lengths are shown to the nearest 1/16″ and angles to 0.1°.
Cut a pattern rafter and check it before cutting the rest.
Common questions
How is span measured?
Outside of top plate to outside of top plate. Run is half the span, to the ridge centreline. Lengths are on the measuring line, parallel to the rafter’s top edge through the outside top corner of the plate. Every input in the app shows where it is measured.
Does it need a connection?
No. Everything runs on the phone and works in airplane mode.
Is there a subscription?
No. One purchase, everything included. No account, no in-app purchases and no analytics.
